The video „Imagine yourself on an island in the middle of the ocean”, inspired by virtual landscapes and related to naive clichés from online guided meditations popular on the YouTube channel, presents one of the ways in which we try to achieve a state of internal balance in the era of information overload. Despite technological progress, virtualization and digitalization of reality, or perhaps because of them, we are looking for rituals and spiritual practices that will allow us to reach the state of deep awareness or at least simulate it.
The starting point of the video was the contemporary understanding of the natural landscape. Present-day virtual reality is shifting our perception and influencing our ideas of what „nature” is. In the work, I attempted to challenge our trust in virtually constructed imagery. The video was created based on virtual landscapes from computer games and on digital blurs, glitches, distortions, and imperfections that often come with games. Fascinated by modern information technologies and their incredible potential to shape lifestyles I tried to answer the question of how to authentically capture the rich duality of physical and virtual life we now experience and ow to present the offline and online experience of real natural surroundings.
My goal was to present a visual study of how our dreams and desires of nature are changed by culture. The video was also motivated by the popular advertisements, which transform mental well-being into a cheap commodity. In the project I used a text written by myself – an author’s guided meditation based on popular video meditations, which listening to is supposed to help to calm down, relax and achieve the dreamed effects on various aspects of life. By using the alphabet of contemporaneity and looking at one of the most classic themes – a landscape, I attempted to present the very common in the digital age craving for relaxation in an idyllic environment.
