Graphic Scores
A series of three large-format graphic works:
- Graphic Notation Neutralising Sonata, digital print on polyester, 400×90 cm, 2023
- Graphic Notation Parallel Tones, digital print on polyester, 600×90 cm, 2023
- Graphic Notation Unstable Oscillations, digital print on polyester, 600×90 cm, 2023
In her artistic practice, Ewa Doroszenko focuses on the visual layer, creating graphic notations and large-format prints that attempt to translate acoustic processes into the language of imagery. Her works can be interpreted as specific spectral landscapes, composed of interference, repetitions, grid transformations, and distorted visualizations. Formally, they strongly reference digital sound environments – individual fragments resemble audio editing interfaces, sampling tools, granular synthesizers, signal-processing algorithms, or spectrograms. In this way, the artist redefines the graphic recording of sound, creating maps of acoustic spaces that serve not merely as representations of sound, but as its visual equivalents.
The series of graphic scores, consisting of three large-format prints (digital print on polyester), was created in 2023. The works were first presented at the Witold Lutosławski National Forum of Music in Wrocław during the Doroszenko duo’s exhibition Unstable Oscillations, accompanying the international Musica Electronica Nova festival dedicated to contemporary electronic music. The second presentation took place at the Municipal Art Gallery bwa in Bydgoszcz as part of the exhibition Acoustic Gestures, which was featured in the Fonomo Music & Film Festival program.
Ewa Doroszenko explores the relationship between image and sound, translating auditory experiences into the language of visual forms. The starting point for this series is the creative process of electronic music – from recording and editing sound, through its deconstruction, modulation, and processing, to the final formation of a complex sonic structure. The artist visualizes the stages of this sonic transformation, focusing on actions such as frequency cutting and filtering, compression, looping, or distortion – typical of studio production, yet expressed here through visual means.
The structure of the works features geometric forms, scattered textures, and deformations reminiscent of data compression artifacts or digital transmission errors (glitch). Recurring motifs are inspired by the visual language of audio editing software – waveform graphs, equalizer grids, and DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) interface parameters – all transformed, stretched, and deconstructed into abstract rhythmic arrangements.
