Melody Patterns

a series of graphic scores, prints on photographic paper, 70 x 50 cm each, 2022

Melody Patterns is a series of visual compositions by Ewa Doroszenko, inspired by avant-garde graphic scores. Using a variety of techniques – including scanography, digital image deconstruction, and algorithmic graphic processing – the artist creates complex visual structures that function as open-form notations: recordings of potential sonic structures, intended both for interpretative performance and machine-based playback using virtual instruments. Doroszenko proposes her own system of notation: abstract, digitally generated forms that also operate as autonomous visual artworks.

First presented in the exhibition Metascore of New Gestures (Muzeum Współczesne Wrocław, 2022), and later in Parallele Schwingungen (Polish Institute Düsseldorf, 2023), the series is rooted in a personal visual language of notation. While formally referencing the tradition of 20th-century graphic scores, Doroszenko’s works are deeply embedded in contemporary aesthetics. Each print in Melody Patterns is an abstract composition in black and white, constructed from arrangements of lines, points, gradients, and distortions – evoking geometric rhythms and organic tensions alike. Doroszenko explores the aesthetic of digital disruption, distortion, and error, visualizing the tensions inherent in today’s algorithmically mediated, data-driven reality. While lacking traditional staves or notes, her scores possess an internal logic and order, allowing for interpretation and performance.

Melody Patterns also embodies an intermedia approach to artistic creation, which consistently characterizes the collaborative practice of Ewa Doroszenko and Jacek Doroszenko. These works function not only as autonomous prints but also as elements of audiovisual arrangements, interacting with Jacek Doroszenko’s sound compositions, video scores, and exhibition environments. In this way, they form part of a holistic experience in which the boundaries between seeing and hearing begin to dissolve. Within the exhibition context, Doroszenko’s scores may be performed live or transformed into algorithmic compositions. When paired with sound, they resonate as visual landscapes that not only register but also materialize sonic phenomena.
